What a great suprise to find so many good restaurants and museums in Sacramento!!!
Living under 2 hours from this state capital I am a bit embarassed I'd never been before. An unexpected "romantic" get-away arranged by my all-things-Old-West-loving-husband turned out to be a great three day weekend.
We arrived at dinner time on Friday night and ate at Rio Cafe next door to Joe's Crab Shack on the riverfront in Old Town. I was disappointed overall and would not go back (maybe for drinks, but not dinner).
We ventured out from our room at the Vagabond Inn on 3rd & I Streets which was just two blocks from Old Town. It was the least expensive place we could find, and it offered free-parking, continental breakfast (decent choice of foods) and had a pool (staying here in mid-summer - a pool was required). The room was very clean and not too noisy, aside from the Amtrak station being across the street and the occassional train whistle, which was sort of nostaglic and charming... We headed to Old Town around 9:00 before everything opened up so we could snap some pictures without a lot of people in them. Old Town actually takes up several blocks along the river and offers a couple of good restaurants (Joe's Crab Shack - for true Maryland style crabcakes...nothing fancy for us purists; La Terraza Mexican overlooking the street from a nice outside eating area with good salsa and nachos, priced well; Fanny Annies has a well priced menu of old favorites like chicken sandwiches and burgers plus the inside is a fun old saloon). Like any tourist part of a town there are some tacky stores selling t-shirts and candy. But, it is not terribly in-your face and doesn't seem to distract from the old feel of this part of town too much.
Don't miss the Train Museum, and old Huntigton hardware store next door (to the left if you are facing the building - these guys that run it are a kick in the pants and have great stories to tell), 40-minute steam train ride, 1-hour Hornblower cruise, Evangelines Costume Store in Old Town, walk along the river across the bridge a couple of blocks to "O" and 2nd Street to the Crocker Art Museum...gorgeous, Fort Sutter, California History Museum (with a great exhibit on Abe Lincoln through August 2009), the capital building and gardens at sunset, ...Unfortunately we did all this in 2-1/2 days and probably missed some other great parts of this city, but what we saw we loved and felt that we were thoroughly entertained the entire time we were in Sacramento. A perfect "romantic" get-away for any Bay Area resident...
