“I didnt know that the word BUDGET meant DIRTY and BROKEN”

Vagabond Inn Sacramento Midtown

I booked several rooms for my family to come for an event in Sac. I choose this one because the price was right and the gal I talked to had assured me that even though the hotel was old, it was very clean and safe. So when we got there we werent expecting the fanciest place but we didnt expect a total dump either. Only 2 of the 4 rooms we booked were decent enough to make do with. Most of the rooms didnt have working A/C in 108* weather, we checked out a few other rooms to move into but they were even scarier looking than the ones that we originally booked. we were all supposed to have mini fridges, microwaves and coffee makers, but that wasnt so. Our room didnt have any of the above. The bathrooms were all dirty in ALL of the rooms, not just a little grimy, but horrible looking black muddy print. Not to mention the shower was broken and we had to use pliers to turn it on. Now for the beds... I think the sheets were clean on the bed, but the bed spread was covered in something sticky, and the mattress and box spring looked as if someone had died on them, horrible blood looking stains all over them not to mention they were soo old they were caving in the middle. If we could afford it we would have left immediately, unfortunately we had no choice but to stay.

On a POSITIVE note:
I must say that the staff (all but one young man at the front desk who had a bad attitude) were exceptionally friendly and I could tell they really wanted to help (its not their fault they work in a dump). Too bad they couldnt combine their friendly customer service with a clean hotel. Also our cars lasted 2 nights without being broken into or vandalized.

Hi My name is Lisa and I just took over this hotel. I know in the past it has had its problems, as with any hotel. I am very sorry you did not enjoy your stay but if you do decide to come back to sacramento please contact me directly. The hotel has under gone some updating including landscaping, and complete over haul of the rooms so i'm sure you will find this hotel much more pleasing to stay at. Once again I am very sorry, but please come try the Vagabond Inn Sacramento Mid Town Again

Based on the previous reviews I read, I was a bit worried about what the hotel was going to be like, but there was nothing to be worried about. The location isn't scary at all - it's not far from nightlife on J St. and I didn't feel uncomfortable walking at 1am from the hotel to J St.
The rate, including tax, was only $53 for a queen bed (booked via travelocity which was cheaper than even Vagabond's website) for a Saturday night stay. Taking the great price into account, you can't complain if the carpet in the hallway isn't brand new, or the bedspread looks worn. Everything was as expected for a hotel in this class.
There's more than enough parking spaces, and the parking lot is well lit.
The hotel website is a bit vague on WiFi availability, but in the room we were staying in, #239, the signal was very strong and there was no problem using the internet.
All in all, I'd definitely stay here again for the price if I needed to.
The reason for staying was to avoid driving back to the bay area after seeing a show at the Blue Lamp - a bar immediately next door - so the location was perfect!

I travel 2 to 3 nights per week on business. Sacramento is a difficult town to find "budget" rooms in that are not scary. The Vagabond midtown is pretty good. The rooms have been clean and comfortable. The wi-fi is not great and the "breakfast" is bad. For under $70 per night it is hard to beat.

“bad location, worse customer service”

I was awoken by the sound of shattering glass, convinced that the door separating the elevator lobby from the deck had been shattered. I remembered seeing security cameras on a monitor at the time of check in, so I determined the safest place for me was to stay in the room. I had an appointment the following day, and as I left at 10 AM, the shattered glass was still everywhere. It looked as if a large glass bottle or wine bottle had been hurled into the foyer, and the hotel was just barley beginning to respond to the dangerous mess.
I had a 2 night reservation, but i didnt feel safe staying there, when I asked for a refund for the second night i was told by the front desk, “It’s not our fault that some of the guests smashed glass bottles in the hallway.” I have been trying to get my money back out of principle , when calling Vagabond Corporate I was told the owner feels the rate of 44.95 a night was a good deal, and he would not refund my money. That is just unacceptable. By this logic, since it was an inexpensive room I should tolerate dirty floors, unclean bathrooms, noisy guests, and hazardous conditions. Regardless of price, no person should have to tolerate risks to their own safety.

I was a bit skeptical about checking in, after reading the above comments, but the area was full for the holiday weekend. When I checked in with my family, I was greeted warmly, and the room was a good value for the cost, and it was actually very clean. I will stay at a Vagabond Inn again in the near future!
