April 2008 - I was in Sacramento, CA attending the I.P.M.A. HR's Western Region Conference. The conference was a great learning experience and network event. Kudos to the organizers.
Check in was smooth, I asked or quiet room as usual, but the Front Desk staff "joked" that I'd like a dirty room. Funny, but that actually was a premonition of things to come. This property is located next to the Downtown Sacramento Shopping Plaza (Outside mall) which include's their flagship store - Macys. This property is also near Old Sacramento (tourist dining and shopping district). Just walk out the front of this property and turn right and take the tunnel below I-5 and in a short walk you're in Old Sacramento. This property is one of the oldest Chain Hotel's in downstown Sacramento. Though it has been rennovated inside.
Upon entering my room I discovered two small problems. First, there was some dirty dark substance in my sink. Second, though minor, there was some small wash towell hanging from the shower rod. I called the front desk, and I spoke with someone who identified himself as the Assistant GM. He assured me the room was not left that way. Hm...if I enter a room for the first time, and it is not clean...then well... I told him I cleaned it up since I used the sink but i took a photo.
He told me that they would send someone up to check it out when I was not using the room, though I told him I used the sink and cleaned it up. I did tell him that I took a digital picture of it.
This answer is not the typical answer you'd expect. A simple I'm sorry is fine. Followed by what can I do for you?
The room was a good size and did feature a small sofa. There was a king bed, but I did not sleep well during my stay. I don't know if it was the bed and/or room climate. Because there is some I-5 Freeway noise that can be heard at night, though I did ask for a quiet room. So if you're going to stay here, ask for a room away from the freeway. There was a medium desk and chair. Lighting in the room was good.
The bathroom was medium size. The water pressure and temperature were good. The TV had many local channels as well as some cable channels.
My room was well cleaned on subsequent days.
I ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant. Average food but less expensive than a Marriott and/or Hyatt breakfast buffet. Service was very good. I also had room service, the response was quick and the food was better than average for room service. During the conference, the lunch served was good for hotel food.
At the mall next door, there is a fast food area on the 2nd floor. Also a Johnny Rocket's diner. On the first floor there is a Micro Bewery resturant and a Starbucks. At the other end of the mall there is a Hard Rock Cafe. Nearby the property is Sacramento's Chinatown. In Chinatown, there is Vietnamese/Thai resturant called Lotus which was okay. In Old Sacramento, there is Indonesian restaurant called Indo Cafe that was very good.
Most of the folks that I came into contact were helpful. The Bellhops were all friendly and helpful. This property is very convenient to the Downtown Shopping Plaza and to Old Sacramento. Though If you want to focus on Old Sacramento you could possibly stay at the Embassy Suites, which I have written a review of.
I used the properties exercise facility but it was small, very warm inside and some of the machines did not operate correctly according to other guests using the facility as well.
The conference rooms, were either a bit cool and/or warm, so bring layers if attending a conference. There were several other conferences there, so this property's business caters to conferences and State of California workers.
When checking out, there were other guests who had issues about their bills.
I'm not sure if I would stay here again, because of the response of Assistant GM, inabilty to sleep well. The best part of this location is right there for the Downtown Shopping Plaza and near Old Sacramento. I can get better rates at the Residence Inn, Capitol Park but the location is not as convenient. Though if I needed to be this close to Downtown Plaza, then I'd think about it if I could get a rate of $110.00 and/or less. So I can only recommend this property if you can get low rate and need to be next to Downtown plaza. Other alternatives include the Embassy Suites, Residence Inn Capitol Park and/or Hyatt Regency.
