I am on the road for 21 days. 21 days, 19 motels.
I am following RT 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica. I will continue from there up the California coast thru San Francisco and I will end my journey in Sacramento. From there I will fly back to Chicago. I will review my every stop on the way. I am Don on Route 66 (and now beyond).
Sacramento is the last stop of my little journey. Just a place to lie in the sun and unwind before heading back to Chicago.
The BW Sandman was my least favorite of the BWs that I have stayed in over the last few weeks. That’s not to say it was bad. There are just a few things that could have been better.
The room was very clean and comfortable. The staff was very nice. The pool area was very nice and enjoyable. The price was decent.
Now for the down sides. The location was good but not great. There were about 4 “good” restaurants within a couple of blocks. The “cool & trendy” restaurants are in midtown; The Sandman isn’t. The motel sits right on the river walk, which makes “Old Sacramento” only a 10 or 15 minute hike. I made the hike and wouldn’t suggest that anyone do this after dark. I saw unsavory looking characters hanging out on the path and homeless people sleeping around abandoned buildings that were well decorated with “tags”. It made me a bit uncomfortable.
The property has very easy Freeway access, which is good and bad. You, pretty much, have to use the freeway to get anywhere within the Sacramento area. The bad side of this, the walls of the room are very thin so as well as hearing adjacent neighbors there is a constant drone of heavy freeway traffic rumbling through the walls.
The place was OK, but if I were to do it again I would stay downtown closer to the restaurants, shopping and tourist attractions.
To end on a positive note, Sacramento is a nice place.
