I was looking for a cheap room, since I would only be in town about 12 hours. I like Best Western, and decided on this motel. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this motel is (it seemed very average or even slightly below based on what I could see online). The front desk staff, especially Christina, is top notch. I needed an early shuttle to the airport, however it was earlier than the hours they offer. She had me book a trip through Super Shuttle and then reimbursed me. Fantastic! The motel backs up against a river (which you also have access to). The room itself is incredibly nice (nicer than most of the pricey hotels I've stayed at), and clean. The location of the motel is great, close to downtown and also to the airport. I am definitely staying here again during my next trip to Sac.

We've stayed here before and loved it, and we were not disappointed! Our check-in experience was great - the clerk gave clear directions and asked how many of us would need internet access. We were each provided with a printout giving us user id's and passwords.

Though the hotel is aging, our bathroom had new fixtures and the room was sparkling clean. Two of my room rating indicators - trash cans and glasses - got high scores. There were THREE trash cans in the room, and actual glass glasses and ceramic coffee mugs (along with disposable for those who might prefer them).

The power strip attached to the desk was a big hit with my family, as we had two laptops, three cell phones, two cameras and a camcorder. . .we didn't plug them all in, but we could have!

When we stopped at the front desk to inquire about a suitable restaurant for dinner, we were directed to Stonebrook's, about a quarter mile away. Though we weren't excited by its looks, we were dazzled by the food and the prices, and appreciated the recommendation.

The next morning, my husband and son had fun making their own waffles, and we all found something we liked for breakfast (I chose cereal and an English muffin). As we headed back to our room, a hotel employee outside directed our attention to the gorgeous sunrise, and we all admired it together before we packed up and headed south.

The Sandman is a favorite of my family, for many good reasons, and we can't wait to stay there again!

The hotel was clean, the staff were friendly, the location was GREAT, and the price was right! In all my travels, I have never been so happy with my choice of a place to stay. Family members who stayed downtown paid twice what we did, and we had more fun! I highly recommend this wonderful motel.

A bike/walking path that follows the river is accessed just out the back of the hotel. A 15 minute walk takes you to Old Sacramento. A 5 minute walk in the other direction leads to a sandy beach. Picturesque views along the river either way. Easy access on and off the Interstate, also, to get anywhere you want in and around Sacramento.

The fitness room is small but has good equipment. However, the A/C was not working during our stay.

  • Liked — Location - close to walking path along the river
  • Disliked — There was nothing not to like!

We have actually stayed here 3 different times. The first when touring the city of Sacramento, the next two times as a one-night stopover. The motel is not worth staying in for a few days, but I reasoned it was worth one night the next time we were passing through. After the second one-night stopover, we will not be staying there again. I have given this place a chance more than once, so I know what I'm talking about. It seems to get worse each time. The place looks worn. The rooms seem small and are dark. This last time we got a 1st floor room with a "patio". It was also small, unkempt, and the table and chairs looked like something you might find on the side of the road. Don't be fooled because it is close to old-town Sacramento and many other attractions because it is a pain to try to find the motel from the highways/interstates and takes awhile to get there. Also don't be fooled by it's location next to the Sacramento River. First of all if you have never been to the Sacramento River, it is dirty and smelly, and the location is not safe. We were warned by the staff not to go out to the river overlook after dusk. Stay elsewhere.

We originally discovered the Best Western Sandman when we were stranded in Sacramento due to a cancelled flight, took a chance on this motel, and were favorably impressed. This trip was our second stay at the Sandman.

It’s motel-style, backing up to the Sacramento River. We arrived on a day when it was 110 degrees outside with very smoky air due to the Northern California wildfires. Our room, however, was blessedly cool and un-smoky. We weren’t as pleased with the adjacent Coyote Junction Restaurant, where the A/C was broken and ceiling fans couldn’t keep us from sweating as we ate our merely-adequate Mexican dinners.

Check-in was quick, but the desk clerk didn’t adequately explain where our room was. After floundering around for a while, we found it. Due to the embankment behind the building, we didn’t even realize that there were rooms on the back side of the motel. This location turned out to be a plus because we discovered the walkway to the river and adjacent bike trail. It also means that our room was quieter than the ones facing the parking lot.

Although the HVAC unit is just a window unit, it’s controlled by a thermostat on the wall. We were able to easily control the temperature to our liking, and the machinery wasn’t noisy at all.
Another glitch at check-in was that they forgot to give me the username and password so that I could log on to the hotel’s free wireless internet system. When I called the front desk, I was given my log-in information over the phone, but it didn’t work. I gave up in frustration rather than call the front desk again.

Because my daughter and I typically travel with our laptops, I always look for available electrical sockets near the beds. Many motels have every electrical outlet in use with the bed lamps, clock/radio, etc. The Sandman thoughtfully provided available electrical sockets on the sides of each bed, plus there was a power strip at the desk (conveniently mounted at desk height, not on the floor). The desk has a real office chair with a comfy padded seat, lumbar support, and a height adjustment lever, not just a straight wood chair.

The rooms come with microwave and refrigerator. Sometimes, the display on the microwave is so bright that we have to stick a towel over it in order to sleep at night. This microwave has an old-fashioned dial, so no glaring light. The clock/radio has only a soft glow that’s easy to sleep by.

The shower temperature was easy to adjust, and it has the now almost-uniform curving shower rod for more elbow room. Water came out in a nice strong spray. Housekeeping forgot to provide us with a bar or bath soap. I had to swipe the hand soap from the sink in order to take my shower. The bath light can’t be turned on without also turning on a noisy ventilation fan; I would have preferred separate switches or a quieter fan. On the plus side, the wide bathroom counter was spacious, and not overly cluttered with ice buckets and coffeemakers (those were elsewhere in the room). The Sandman provides a hair dryer.

Instead of generic abstract paintings, our room at the Sandman had paintings of the State Capitol, the Tower Bridge, and the Delta King steamboat. I appreciated the local touch.

The beds came complete with three plump pillows each, plus an extra in the closet. The beds were comfortable enough, but jiggly. If you’re a couple, you’ll feel every move your partner makes.

The breakfast room is two converted guest rooms. They provide an enhanced continental breakfast with waffles, hard-boiled eggs, and yogurt in addition to cereals, toast, muffins, etc. This is probably the first motel ever that offered soy milk for more lactose-intolerant husband to use on his cereal. I appreciated the rotator-belt toaster instead of waiting for the six customers ahead of me to use a standard pop-up toaster. My bagel came out just the right shade of golden brown, and quickly, too.

For $83/night, the Best Western Sandman is one of the best values in the near-downtown/Old Sacramento area. We’d definitely stay again.

  • Liked — Lots of amenities for the price, thoughtful touches.
  • Disliked — Jiggly beds, absent-minded desk staff.
