I've never stayed at a Bed and Breakfast before and I've always wanted to. I've always been drawn to older homes, woodwork, cotton, trees, and poetry. In this way my stay at the Amber House was perfect. I don't go for many of the details some might; although this does not mean those details were not taken care of at the Amber House. I look more for character, soul, and something you can't quite name.

The moment I walked up the steps to the Inn I felt a feeling of relief wash over me. I'd been hauling baggage around all morning and we were in the introductory fase of the first heat wave of the year. There I was at the front door, I rang the bell. From then on I was so well taken care of. I had to arrive early because check out of the hostle I'd stayed at the night before was earlier than check in. They were so kind; they offered to put my bags in my room when it was available and sent me off on my way to a wonderful lunch right down the street. (The Amber House is in Midtown, one of my favorite parts of Sacramento; there is so much character, so many trees, it's beautiful)

I came back and got the first look at my new home for the next two days. I was absolutely pleased. I stayed in the Wordsworth room and the white and blue colors, the windows and light, the bed... all was inviting and brought me into a feeling of peacefulness and crisp relaxation. The bathroom was large and the victorian soaking tub is beyond words. Huge.

Every evening I was served hot tea and chocolate cookies... Every morning a two course breakfast in my room... I could have had it anywhere... but I was feeling the desire to be private... alone. Next time I'd like to spend more time in the rest of the house and the garden. There is the most amazing little sitting room/library with good books... and it's all so inviting. There is an amazing porch with a swing chair and tables to sit and relax at.

I didn't get a chance to look at the other house across the street, the 1895 Dutch revival house; the garden is behind that house. I hope to stay in that house one day too. Infact I would like to stay in every room! I have to say that I made a good first choice in the Wordsworth room; it has a king size bed which would have been very nice to share with a loved one... and the tub for me is better than any jet tub.

The only thing lacking was a better view. But honestly... I paid no more attention to that than but for one moment when I first arrived.

Each room has a little journal for guests to write in. If you see the uniqueness of each room you realize the genius behind that... On my last morning while I ate my amazing breakfast I read through notes guests had written... and some brought tears to my eyes. We all travel for different reasons. Mine was to 'get away' and to experience something new and special... and I did that. I wrote my note, and packed my things, and said good bye.

Before I end this review I want to mention the amazing staff. They took such good care, were so thoughtfull and had wonderful attitudes. It wasn't too much and it wasn't too little, just perfect. And... last but not least... I heard that you can get married there...

One day if it ever happens... which I hope it does... I would be so pleased to experience that special day there at the Amber House... You have to go and see it, experience it! I can't wait to go back.

We weren't specifically looking for a B&B, but after looking at the prices and
reviews of Sacramento hotels, choose Amber House. The room decor was quite pretty, the bed very comfy. The bathroom appeared to have been updated recently and was very clean and large. Everything was quite well maintained--from the building to the comforters-- and you get a fancy breakfast on top of it! My husband remembered that he had stayed there many years ago on business, as it was on a direct bus line to the court house. The next time we need to go to Sacramento, we will defintely stay at Amber House.

We arrived at the inn wiped out from our wedding, and discovered that it was just the quiet, quaint place that we needed! We loved the see-through fireplace, the heart-shaped jacuzzi, and amazingly-comfortable bed... The next morning it was absolutely wonderful to wake up to a freshly-made breakfast not only delivered to our room, but set up at our table! Our family requested vegan food for us, and we were pleasantly surprised that that didn't deter them from creating a delicious meal of fresh fruit and apple-nut French toast. It was by far the best breakfast we had on our whole honeymoon! The service was great, very friendly and professional, and we were very reluctant to leave after only one night! We would love to return sometime...

This was my second stay at the Amber House and it couldn't have been better. From the warm welcome, luxurious bed and whirlpool bath to the gas fireplace, amazing breakfast and modern conveniences, this is by far the best bed and breakfast I have ever stayed at.
I had previously stayed in the Vivaldi room which has a 2 person jacuzzi tub, private balcony/patio, gas fireplace, flat screen tv, queen sized bed and free wireless internet. This stay was in the Dickinson room which also has a queen bed, heart shaped 2 person jacuzzi tub, gas fireplace, flat screen tv and free wireless internet as well as beautiful skylights.
All rooms come with antique style furniture and bathrobes. The home made granola and scones in the morning with fresh fruit, juice and coffee were perfect. The staff was welcoming and felt like family.
The location is right near some little bistros and local eateries and in a quiet neighborhood.
You can't go wrong with a stay at the Amber House no matter if you're a business traveler like me, a couple (the rooms are very romantic) or a family.
I can't wait for my stay next month.

My wife and I stayed at the Amber House for two days after Thanksgiving to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We found it to be a feast for the senses.

Taste: We were greeted with a plate of 4 large chocolate chip cookies. More are delivered each evening around 7. Complimentary beverages are served discretely any time you want until 10 and first thing in the morning. Oh, and they serve breakfast. Scrumptious two course breakfast, either delivered to your room or downstairs. The advantage of having breakfast downstairs is that you get to see the people who serve you. They were friendly, smiling and helpful. I was unaware you can broil grapefruit. Turns out it's a great idea that mellows the acid. We were sufficiently full of eggs and potatoes on our first day that we missed lunch entirely. I enjoyed the next morning's soy french toast, in spite of the fact that I had as yet to enjoy any soy product.

Sight: The house is lovely. We live in the SF South Bay area: a lanced boil oozing the puss of endless poorly built tract homes. The Amber House couldn't be more different. A Craftsman style home from 1905, its full of interesting wooden furnishings, stained glass and trap doors. You can actually get under the eaves from our room. I'm convinced the person who kept bringing us tea vanished into the hall closet.

Touch: Not only are the furnishings lovely to look at, they are lovely to use. While eating breakfast I noticed that I was sitting with good posture. This never happens. I'm usually hunched, Igor style over the computer, a book, stationary or my food. But the chairs in our room seemed to make bad posture impossible. The Sitting room was great: for sitting. I could have spent all afternoon their reading (did I mention they have, get this, books in their library).

Sound: Of all the period furnishings in the house, my least favorite are the authentically single pane windows. They provide minimal insulation from noise or temperature. On the positive side, they do have a dock for your iPod, so you can drown out any noise coming in. (I'm not sure if this will effect other patrons or not)

Smell: Well, it smells nice. Neither overly scented nor musty. That's pretty impressive for a 100 year old house.

So go book your tickets already and drink it all in, especially the mangosteen green tea.
