I recently stayed at the Residence Inn for 5 nights on business travel. I was pleasantly surprised to check into a spacious, well accommodated 1bedroom suite. The bed was comfortable (with lots of pillows) and the flat screen tvs were great. I was told breakfast is served downstairs in the a.m. and was expecting something like muffins and juice. What I had was eggs, bacon, sausage, fresh breads and make-your-own waffles, as well as every cereal imaginable and 'real' oatmeal. Everytime I came back to the hotel, I was greeted with a "welcome back" by the front desk. I WILL stay at this hotel again.

“If location is what you want...”

If the location in city center is what you want I would consider this hotel. If city center is not important, look elsewhere.
We have stayed in many Marriotts, and Residence Inns over the years, especially when the kids were in tow. This one, although new, wasn’t one would do again. We also looked into the Hyatt, Sheraton, less costly hotels (there aren’t any in that area) and Bed and Breakfasts. We chose the more costly RI because of rewards points and breakfasts over the others. (B&B was far more and not close enough). Yes, I read all the reviews, but took a chance on this one.
I am not a major complainer, but this review will appear so. I really do enjoy writing reviews that highly recommend people go…for comfort, price and atmosphere. We don’t do the luxury places, so I am not comparing to them.

First of all, I will state the positives: Great for business travelers needing to be city center. My husband walked to his meetings across the street at the convention center while I took the car and visited friends and family (we used to live in Sacramento). It is fairly easy to find. Not far from Old Sacramento, but then, nothing in Sacramento is very far. We appreciated the decent buffet each morning. There aren’t really any places right nearby to eat an affordable breakfast. Lunch and dinner are few. The room was clean. There was easy parking, although a fee.
Hotel was quiet. It seemed very few people were there.

Negatives: First mistake was my finding the best (overpriced) price possible for a one bedroom, then turning it over to the business travel agent who booked the room for even more. I discovered when we walked into the room that we had a Studio. I had called to verify twice before arriving, and also asked for a view. I was told the 2 bedrooms had the views. I didn’t know we had a studio from our reservation printout. Bad start. The studio was very crowded, although there was plenty of square footage. There was too much furniture. We had to place the luggage on the very uncomfortable hard couch and on an end table, placing a lamp on the floor. I have never seen such a tight studio before. I was grateful for the kitchen/fridge to keep the overpriced dinner leftovers for my next day lunch.
I know Marriotts have all new bedding. We have had the pleasure of using them. I don’t think this one has it yet. Not near as comfortable as others.
The pool is in shade basically all day and a fishbowl below all the rooms. I didn’t use it as it was a bit cool without sun.
The great Hi Def TV had no guide and very limited channels to watch. Very slow response made it even more difficult to try surfing for a show.
Hotel parking is very expensive and limited to the upper floors. For less money you can enter from another street and park in lower spaces of the same garage. Except during the Jazz festival or something, I would think there is always plenty of parking. In and out may be an issue with the lesser cost.
We found desk staff not very helpful. I had called and asked for a room with a view or near the pool I got an 8th floor room with a view of the rather pitiful pool which is on 2nd floor, and the garage (standard). When I asked about the higher price booked thru the agent, rather than what I had just been quoted, I was told “it happens”. When we got Studio for more instead of 1 bedroom for less nothing could be done. I didn’t complain, just asked. We weren’t paying this tab but I was still not happy.
Another fyi concern is hotels which allow pets, but most have specific rooms where pets stay. RI doesn’t specify an area. Although our room was clean and we didn’t suffer, it could have been miserable if cats had been in there. NO cleaning by hotel staff will completely rid the evidence for allergies which is a major concern for us.

“A Different Kind of Residence Inn”

Residence Inn Sacramento at Capitol Park

Sep 9, 2008

I stayed one night at the Residence Inn at Capitol Park in early September, 2008. This is a brand new property--only open a few months and looks and feels new in every way. Quite different from the usual suburban Residence Inn--15 stories with an adjacent parking garage. Compact rooms of higher quality construction. Excellent location at 15th & L, diagonally across from Capitol Park.

I had a one bedroom with a king bed in a separate room just large enough to walk around the bed on 3 sides. The sitting room, which had a sofa bed and one upholstered chair, also was smaller than in the usual Residence Inn, with a full kitchen in one corner. Small eating table for two in addition to a desk. Two TVs, both flat panel, larger one in sitting room. Good TV reception and fairly good channel selection. Only one thermostat (in bedroom) that didn't seem to influence room temperature much. Central air conditioning was powerful and slightly noisy. When it got too cold, I had to turn off the air. Only one wastebasket--perhaps an oversight by the maid. Good showerhead over tub with adequate hot water. My room was very quiet except for dumpster emptying at 5 am. Room lighting and counter space at bath sink were both adequate.

Parking cost $24 for valet (plus tips) or $17 for self-parking. To self-park you have to go way up, round and round, to reach the designated area.

Above average selection at complimentary breakfast except eggs and sausages were of low quality. Breakfast seating was adequate between 8:30 & 9 on Monday morning, but hotel probably was at low occupancy.

Four computers and two printers next to the breakfast room. Cold air comes down on your neck while using any of the computers. The computers are on a slow server.

All in all, my stay was satisfactory, but unexciting. Nicest aspect was that everything was new.

We had the two bedroom two bath suite for one night, fantastic. Big window overlooking capital, beautifully furnished. Lots of restaurants within walking distance. Only weird thing was the ice maker in the fridge didn't work very well and was turned off when we got there. I found out the reason later on that night when it finally made a batch of ice and it landed with a loud crash into the bin. I got out of bed and quickly turned that off. Staff was pleasant and very helpful.

We were really happy with this place. I was traveling with my husband and 2 little kids to a friend's wedding at a vineyard near Sacramento, and we thought it might be fun to stay in town for a few days. We were really glad we did! The hotel is new and really lovely and the service was very nice too.
The room had a separate bedroom and living room, each with a big flat screen TV, and the living room includes a really nice FULL kitchen -- Including dishes and cookware! Anyone traveling with small kids can appreciate the beauty of having your own kitchen when you're on the road. Everything pretty much looked just like the pictures online. The room was very clean and new.
The hotel has a very nice pool, jacuzzi and gym, which were right down the hall from us. It also had a very decent breakfast which was included in the price. We were amazed at what a great value it all was at $120 a night.
We had a nice view of the park in front of the capitol from our window, and there are lots of great restaurants in nearby "midtown", several which will deliver to the hotel.
oh, and I think it was Gay Pride weekend while we were there, so that spiced things up a bit!
Anyway, we discovered there are all kinds of fun things to do in Sacramento with kids --- like touring Old Sacramento and it's train museum, and visiting Fairy Tale park in Land Park.
My kids now think of sleepy little Sacramento as this amazing destination! And for that I give a lot of credit to this hotel.
