I booked a stay via the hotel website and got a Queen Queen Room (2 Queen/1 Bath) with the “Stay for Breakfast” option. Our stay was a long weekend during the fall of 2007.
This is a nice, recently updated or completely remodeled facility. The rooms were contemporary, clean, spacious, and the bed & pillows were comfortable. The size was not bad either – roomy, nice planning of space and the FREE wireless connection was a breeze. I travel with a Mac and usually have problems with this, so this was impressive to me indeed.
The only problem with the room was the design of the bathroom. It was nice enough – lots of room on counter, good toiletries, plenty of towels & decent water pressure. However, they neglected to install fans. There is no window either, so the only way to get the steam out of the bathroom was to leave the door open. I saw what was beginning to look like bubbling paint on the ceiling and the corners of the bathtub between the tiles had a little mold. Unless housekeeping can prevail in this ventilation war, I would think this could only lead to problems in the very near future. Why they would think of almost every amenity yet not install fans for the bathrooms is something of a mystery. Had it not been for this issue, I would have given this hotel 5 stars instead of 4.
I’m a Marriott rewards member and have stayed in several locations throughout the Western US, and I think this particular facility is the best Courtyard/Residence Inn I’ve been in so far. The contemporary décor and lobby were very nice, especially the spacious dining room. With the limited wait staff & linen napkins, it made for a more restaurant feeling instead of the usual cafeteria feeling I’ve found with the older Courtyards or Residence Inns I've stayed at. The buffet breakfast was outstanding! There was even an omelet station with a friendly cook to take your special order & deliver it to your table. Even without the breakfast package room rate, the price of $10.95 for a buffet breakfast within the hotel is a great choice.
The location is very convenient - next to the freeway and centrally located in the Arden/Bus 80 area. It made my visit to my family and friends who are spread out over to other areas of Sacramento (Downtown, Elk Grove, Roseville, Folsom) very easy. Also, there is plenty of free parking.
Over the years, I’ve stayed at many hotels in Sacramento and have usually stayed at the Hyatt downtown. But with the Marriott’s low price, great amenities, nice staff & convenient location, it can’t be beat. From now on, when visiting Sacramento, I’ll be making the Courtyard Marriott Cal Expo my 1st choice from now on.
