My husband, six year old son and I stayed for three nights on a long weekend trip to Sacramento. I used reward points for two nights so thought this was a decent deal.

The pros:

The restaurant food is pretty good and not really overpriced.

The hotel staff were great.

The outdoor pool was kept quite warm and even in February was comfortable to swim in. The hot tub might have been a little too hot.

The rooms were decent size and the internet access is free as is parking.

You have easy access to the highway to go downtown to the airport or to a mall about five minutes away with alot of chain dining options.

The cons:

Don't stay by an elevator or you'll be hearing the squeak clunk noise all day and night.

The trains pass by and are also loud enough to be heard.

The towels are thin.

There is nothing within walking distance for shopping or restaurants.

All in all it was a fine Courtyard experience.

The Hotel is new and that shows, but the staff was excellent. From the front desk to the restaurant and bar staff everyone was attentive and went out of their way to make your stay enjoyable.

“Very disappointing for a Courtyard”

Courtyard by Marriott Sacramento Cal Expo

Nov 16, 2007

Oh my gosh! It was 10 pm and I had just gone to sleep and a train sounds like it is going through my room. Every hour another train would come through and they would lay on the horn the entire length of the hotel. It must be something they do to get their jollies. If you want to sleep, bring industrial strength ear plugs.

The carpet is a bit worn. The room was not as clean as I expected it to be. Hairs on the bathroom floor are unacceptable.

The front desk just acted like they really did not care.

This hotel is a disappointment.

I normally find myself in agreement with TripAdvisor reviews, but I have to disagree with most everyone about this Courtyard. Maybe I just stayed at the wrong time, but let me share my experience.
First night there, I was kept up all night by the sound of freight trains blaring their horns, every 1/2 hour. Then starting at about 7:30am the room above me sounded like the circus had come to town.It was almost like the guests were running laps in their room. I was given a corner room (which I normally prefer), but not this one, I heard it everytime someone went up or down the stairwell next door. I finally got so frustrated that I went to the front desk and asked to have my room changed, which they did pleasantly.
As the 2nd room was on the 3rd floor, no noise problem from above, but still heard the horns from the freight trains. I have to wonder how much research Marriott did in choosing this sight which seems to be adjacent to a heavily trafficked portion of railroad tracks.

On the positive side, there is a full service bar/restaurant. The hotel is still in great shape, and the staff has been helpful, but when push comes to shove, I will always choose a good nights sleep.

I booked a stay via the hotel website and got a Queen Queen Room (2 Queen/1 Bath) with the “Stay for Breakfast” option. Our stay was a long weekend during the fall of 2007.

This is a nice, recently updated or completely remodeled facility. The rooms were contemporary, clean, spacious, and the bed & pillows were comfortable. The size was not bad either – roomy, nice planning of space and the FREE wireless connection was a breeze. I travel with a Mac and usually have problems with this, so this was impressive to me indeed.

The only problem with the room was the design of the bathroom. It was nice enough – lots of room on counter, good toiletries, plenty of towels & decent water pressure. However, they neglected to install fans. There is no window either, so the only way to get the steam out of the bathroom was to leave the door open. I saw what was beginning to look like bubbling paint on the ceiling and the corners of the bathtub between the tiles had a little mold. Unless housekeeping can prevail in this ventilation war, I would think this could only lead to problems in the very near future. Why they would think of almost every amenity yet not install fans for the bathrooms is something of a mystery. Had it not been for this issue, I would have given this hotel 5 stars instead of 4.

I’m a Marriott rewards member and have stayed in several locations throughout the Western US, and I think this particular facility is the best Courtyard/Residence Inn I’ve been in so far. The contemporary décor and lobby were very nice, especially the spacious dining room. With the limited wait staff & linen napkins, it made for a more restaurant feeling instead of the usual cafeteria feeling I’ve found with the older Courtyards or Residence Inns I've stayed at. The buffet breakfast was outstanding! There was even an omelet station with a friendly cook to take your special order & deliver it to your table. Even without the breakfast package room rate, the price of $10.95 for a buffet breakfast within the hotel is a great choice.

The location is very convenient - next to the freeway and centrally located in the Arden/Bus 80 area. It made my visit to my family and friends who are spread out over to other areas of Sacramento (Downtown, Elk Grove, Roseville, Folsom) very easy. Also, there is plenty of free parking.

Over the years, I’ve stayed at many hotels in Sacramento and have usually stayed at the Hyatt downtown. But with the Marriott’s low price, great amenities, nice staff & convenient location, it can’t be beat. From now on, when visiting Sacramento, I’ll be making the Courtyard Marriott Cal Expo my 1st choice from now on.
