There are other great choices for fantastic ice cream from historic establishments in Sacramento. You can visit, Burr’s, Vic’s, or Gunther’s. Some of the less historic and franchised establishments are able to provide equal to better service and with less of a pricing impact on your wallet: I recommend, Dairy Queen, Baskin Robbins, Cold Stone, Ben & Jerry’s… all of which are within a five-mile radius of Leatherby’s.

While the serving sizes lean to generous (not recommended for those concerned with their waist lines) and prices are above average (stop at the ATM first for cash $40 + TIP – lunches, beverages and desserts for two people), if you enjoy having to park and cross a busy street because the parking lot is full of cars for the businesses next door, if you enjoy waiting to be seated (at times 15 – 30 minutes), if you enjoy waiting to be served (another 10 -30 minutes), if you enjoy sticky tables and wobbly chairs, if you enjoy tepid and stale tasting tap water, if you enjoy unmanaged restrooms, if you enjoy being served by staff who appear unkept and annoyed by your questions, by all means visit Leatherby’s.

I used to go there as a kid with my friends and family and fondly remembered the ice cream servings bigger than my head. As an adult, the last few times I visited with my own family the only thing that is the same about the place is the older building and the owners. I would make the following comparison. Leatherby’s is like Chucky Cheese; we loved going there as children, but was it really all that great for the price, value, and for the adults' taste buds?

If you do go there, I hope your experience is much better and that you do enjoy yourself.

I grew up in Sacramento, and Leatherby's is a tradition. Primarily an old fashioned ice cream parlor, they make the best (and biggest) sundaes around. The food is so-so, but who goes to an ice cream parlor for the sandwiches? I haven't lived in California for many years, but I try to go by whenever I'm in town, and I'm never disappointed!

My friends wanted to go to The Cheesecake Factory, but I persuaded them to go to Leatherby's. Little did I know that since Big Daddy Dave Leatherby isn't running things on the day-to-day, everything is different, especially the regard for customers.

While waiting to be seated next to the "Please Wait To Be Seated Sign," everyone was walking past us and seating themselves. The waitress that finally came after some wait said that we could have sat ourselves.

When I got up to go to the restroom, the manager on duty... a twenty-something looking kid, asked me to stop soliciting his customers, because I stopped to chat with a person I work with (at another table). When I told him that I worked with him, his response (Manager Tony's response) was, "that's no excuse."

Next time we will go to The Cheesecake Factory, where the customer and customer service are still valued!"
