I was in Sacramento on business (not a convention), and stayed here for two days because a business associate had stayed here - it was close to our client. I stay at Holiday Inn/Express or Hamptons when possible. I find they most consistently deliver what they promise and I can expect they will meet certain standards.
Not so with this property.
Apparently the same owner and management staff handles this hotel and the Clarion next door. I think dividing their staff this way puts both properties at a disadvantage. What was evident at the Holiday Inn Express was the number of ammenities that were out of order. The elevator near the front desk wasn't working the night I checked in. The high-speed Internet was out for the entire length of my stay (although I was told I was welcome to go next door to use the Clarion's - not very convenient). The Pepsi vending machine took my money without telling me that my selection was sold out. I was told by the front desk that I would need to see the manager in the morning to get reimbursed - they didn't have any cash in their till. This was at about 8:00 pm. Then I tried the snack machine, and it wouldn't even take my money. I had to call room service (provided, again, by the Clarion) twice to get my order. The voice mail I left the first time was ignored.
The staff was pleasant enough, but only responsive up to a point. In most cases, the solution that was offered was to go next door to the Clarion. Perhaps I should have stayed there. The room rate was better, but the hotel had outside entrances, which I don't care for.
The room was reasonably clean, but there was evidence that the door had been kicked in or forced open or something and not properly repaired. The door frame was chewed up near the security latch, and the deadbolt was gone.
I saw some evidence of things that others have mentioned, specifically the condition of the neighborhood, but wasn't affected by that personally.
My stay was extended by a third night after I checked out of the hotel. Although this was the closest hotel to the airport with availability, I found a room a bit further away at a Marriott Courtyard. I would never stay at this Holiday Inn Express again.
