My stay at the Embasssy Suite in May 2005 was a bit less than great. I had a lovely view of the Sacramento River and Tower Bridge (BTW it is not called the L St Bridge but the Tower Bridge), with Raley Field on the opposite bank.
Being originally from Sacramento I was eager to stay at Sacramento's newest hotel. The room was standard Embassy Suite fare, clean, comfortable and for the most part well appointed with a mini-fridge, coffee maker, microwave, and wet bar. I hesitate to say, there were some striking disappointments.
First I must disclose that due to the convention I was attending, the room rates were over inflated and since my hotel was booked just several days before the convention I paid a whopping $170 per night. When I arrived at the hotel I was informed that all parking was valet at $18 per night. For Sacramento the room rate was quite high by all accounts, but all comparable hotels had no vacancy. My second disappointment was that the pool was out of service. When I was able to peek in the pool window past the paper covering the window from the outside, it looked to be still under construction! In reading an earlier post from Nov 2004 I was surprised to see a similar comment ...since I assumed that the pool closure was a renovation.
Contrary to what you may think from this review, I'm not usually this picky but here goes ...the third item, the bed was extremely firm, uncomfortably firm and as a result I only got a few hours sleep. Finally my last negative point, the breakfast was very very bad. Embassy Suites breakfasts are pretty standard so I wasn't expecting a gastronomic extravaganza but the scrambled eggs were luke warm and powdery. The sausage was cold and looked to be a bit undercooked. Also, in general, I wasn't sure if there was in-room dining available. When I looked at my hotel services binder, the menu pages had been removed but the section tab was still there.
I'd like to think that my experience was just a fluke since for the most part other posters seem to have had a pleasurable stay. The hotel location is wonderful. So close to Old Sacramento and the Railroad Museum. A vintage steam train comes by periodically during the museums business hours which end at 6PM. If you have a river view, watching the river traffic and the mid-section of the Tower bridge raise and lower to accomodate the larger boats is quite pleasant. The new riverfront promenade and dock just outside the hotel is lovely.
Mind you, I've never been compelled to write such things about a hotel stay but at the price I was charged I was expecting a much more comfortable bed and at least the standard Embassy Suites breakfast.
My recommendation for travelers is, be sure to book your room early to get a great rate. To the Embassys credit, they were working on the pool so inquire before booking your stay if you consider a dip in the pool an important item on your list.
Happy Travels.
