We had our wedding at the Vizcaya in 2007 and the customer service was very poor, downright unprofessional. The hotel coordinator arrived one hr. before the start of the ceremony (2 hrs later than promised), leaving our friends and families to set up the details she was supposed to attend to. The staff knew all along that the coordinator would be late, but never bother to tell our party about the 2 hr delay. She also did not have the correct agenda, so most everything was off. She asked me many questions about timing, when I had other things on my mind, bypassing my point person.

We booked this place because the grounds are pretty, but once they have your money, they don't care about anything else. Guests don't know the behind the scenes drama, but it's lousy to have to host.

On two days notice we decided to go to the Sacramento Dixieland Jazz Jubilee -- and soon found that any rooms close to the Jubilee sites (which are scattered over several miles) -- were going to be marked up for the big event.
Luckily I thought of checking for Bed & Breakfasts (using the Expedia link from traveladvisor) because that is where I located the Vizcaya, which happened to have one room left for Friday night. It is a lovely Inn - - an elegant mansion with large rooms. Furnished with antiques but not overdone. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom large and functional, and they offered us a full breakfast.
The Vizcaya is owned by the same folks who run the Sterling Hotel and they are the top of the heap in elegant old Sacramento wedding locations, dining, and accomodations.

My Husband and I stayed at the Vizcaya hotel for our anniversary, The Innkeepers are the nicest people I have ever came across. I went in there not having much money and they worked with me, They gave me there master suite at a very reasonable price, I talked with the innkeeper Angela and I was telling her how I did not have much time to decorate my room being that it was a supprise for my husband. she completly offered to fully decorate the room. She went to the store and baught the decorations for me, and went and got the flowers for me, She even had restraunt menus waiting in the room when we arrived. We did not have alot of money to pay for the $15.00 min on the food you order so I called down and asked directions to a great restraunt she not only gave me directions but she also offered to go pick my food up for us. Her fiance was the most polite man I have ever met, They were deffenatly meant fr each other. From what I have seen anyone would be crazy not to stay at the hotel the innkeepers really make it worth coming back.
Thank you.

My husband and I were married at the Vizcaya. We had a really great experience. From planning to walking down the aisle we really enjoyed our experience. We were sooo busy before the actual wedding we were unable to meet Elizabeth (wedding coordinator) until the day of the wedding or even rehearse the night before. We had driven to Sacramento to look the place over especally because we read the rest of the not so good experiences on this site. The building matchs the internet picture. True there are two water marks on the celling and we did not spend the night at the hotel but the rooms are really pretty. I say pretty because the one we viewed had a pink italian marble fire place, very cool. Anyway the buffet was mouth watering and we were completly catered to. The lead server was fantastic she really made sure everything was perfect and to our preference throughout the reception. Elizabeth was on top of everything! We are so completley happy with the Vizcaya and the service we recieved we would definitly recommend the Vizcaya. We were married outside in the courtyard in the gazebo and held our reception inside. The stained glass on the ceiling is a great touch. The fountain, patio, and courtyard make for beautiful pictures. This venue is affordable and beautiful. We were very happy!!!!!

I find that the reviews of hotels generally are slanted to the few who have a gripe to make. Most people who enjoy a hotel don't run home to write about it, but those who don't, can't seem to stop. As a result, I try to write both with equal vigilance.

That said...be forewarned.

The Vizcaya is absolutely wanting for service, class and just plain cleanliness. My wife and I stayed due exclusively to its 4 star rating. I would agree with many other visitors that the bed and breakfast would not receive 1 star in comparison to any generally accepted rating system.

From the moment we walked in, the service was atrocious. We were clearly a bother to the one person staff member who couldn't have been over 19. She apparently was saddled with double duty of cleaning floors and hosting incoming guests...and we were clearly cutting in on mopping time.

She had us sign in and pointed at our room across the back patio. Parking is atrocious. The room, when we finally did get in, was dank and mildew smelling. I never expect a Four Seasons when choosing a 100 year old bed and breakfast, but I also do not expect the same sheet set from 100 years ago. The beds were extremely noisy and poorly maintained. The refrigerator was inoperative as was the fireplace. We were suppose to have a suite and their suite apparently was determined by the fact that a coffee table was in the room. The carpets were stained miserably and the house abuts an alley that insures that any traffic not found on the carpet was a short glance outside the room. Just a pet peeve for anyone going with a woman or any amount of bathroom paraphernalia...there is no counter space. None. Well, at least not in our room. We were forced to put toothbrushes, hair brushes, antiperspirant, etc... on the floor on a towel.

I can't speak to breakfast because I was terrified to even attempt the "gourmet" meal after the "4-star" accommodations.

Frankly, returning is never an option. While the picture opportunities at the front fountain are fabulous, the rest of the service and rooms were less than picturesque.
