Never mind the pages and pages of health code violations, the cracked tubs, the greasy carpets, the dirty beds, the overcooked food, the noise, the dry rot, the termites, roaches and mice, or the fact that they were serving (though not selling) alcohol without a liquor license until late last year.
The one and only thing that the Sterling/Chanterelle has ever been consistently praised for--its wonderful employees who always go above and beyond for their guests--consistently go UNPAID for WEEKS at a time. It is a HUGE hassle for us to obtain our paychecks. Members of management conveniently go missing on payday, and most of the time payday is pushed back for days. Even if we do finally get our hands on our paychecks, it takes hours, days, weeks of our time to collect on them because there are always insufficient funds in the payroll account and we have to wait for funds to become available. Many people, even after having their check supposedly go through, have seen it suddenly bounce and are forced to cover overdraft fees. Of course it's the same story with anyone they have to pay, like vendors, suppliers and musicians. Management says it's because there is no revenue coming in, but it's very obvious that something's rotten in the state of Denmark.
Maybe we should be asking people to please, please, please stay at the Sterling and eat at the Chanterelle so we can get paid, but you must make that decision yourself...and now you know what it's like for us. In this horrific economy the employees of the Sterling/Chanterelle are in a terrible position--yes, we are lucky to have jobs, but we can only work for free for so long under incompetent management and blatantly illegal
