I took the kids here to teach them a little of their own ancestry. We are direct descendants of the Bidwells, so I thougt this would be a fun place for them to see.
If they're fairly well-behaved, kids can run around a bit. There are rooms with doors open and when they look in, electonic sensors give a self-guided tour explaining what they are looking at, and what life was like back then. There were rooms set up for dry goods storage, gunsmithing, metalsmithing, kitchens, weaving looms, barrel making, and other skills and crafts needed by the settlers in order to survive.
You really begin to understand Sutter's vision by listening to the tour.
Most of the fort is wheelchair accessible, but the main house is upstairs. The rest of the tour is very informational, and if you skipped the main house you wouldn't miss much.
