 Sacramento/Folsom recommendations

So my boyfriend and i are checking out sacramento/folsom CA this coming weekend as potential places to relocate. We are staying in the downtown sac area and are looking for some good local hang out places/bars to get a feel of the area. We are also going to check out Folsom as that's got a great outdoor scene with a few local bars. So can you recommend any bars/restaurants in the Sacramento and Folsom area? Again, the purpose is mainly to get a good feel of the locals and the area so we'd like to avoid any touristy places, if possible.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

In Folsom, go to Manderes. It's a tiny little bar (ex-Dairy Queen) with fantastic food and drinks. http://www.manderes.com/ The Streets of London is a block away from that, and most everything else is on Sutter Steet in the Historic district. Check out www.myfolsom.com to see tons of restaurant discussions (and more) by the locals.

Thanks for the recommendation. We'll be sure to check out that bar in Folsom. The beer selection is quite imprssive!

Anyone recommend any local bars/restaurants in Sacramento?

Again, thanks for anything that you may think would be helpful!

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Sacramento

Intersting questions- I like people who want to check out areas before they move here; its exactly what my wife and I did before we moved from Providence RI.

There are two places that seem rather "new" and frequented by locals that I've enjoyed lately.

L Wine Bar and Lounge, 1801 L St., is an intown bar and restaurant serving small plates, appetizers and salads, etc. I really liked the place and the presentation. The location is great, inside the midtown grid. I need to write them a nice review here, soon.

I really also liked The Shady Lady, 1409 R st. Great food, dine in or out, great bar scene, trendy area that has a lot of bistro, bar, ice cream, hot dogs and nightlife. I need to go back for one more visit when I get back to Sacramento, before reviewing it, but the meatloaf I had was fabulous. Three individual loafs wrapped in bacon on a bed of melt in your mouth mashed potatos. My wife enjoyed as well.

Sorry to all that I've been infrequent on the forum. I'm back east for July and August- Boston, Providence, Montreal, Quebec, Wells-Moody Beach, Foxwoods, and a great drive on I-80 all the way to and from.

enjoy your visit to Sacramento and folsom- Dave

Thanks for the encouragement and kind words! We are mostly looking for local, low key bars to hang out. They could be irish pubs, brew pubs, wherever locals hang out and where we can get the most flavor of the local scene. Both of us are not really into dance clubs..... As far as restaurants, we are really into sushi so a recommended local sushi joint would be fabulous! And any other restaurants that are people's favorites in the area - we are not picky as far as cuisine so long it's great food and a must try during the short amount of time we are there.

Thanks again! We are planning on re-locating from NJ area..... Good to hear other people there had moved from the NE! :)

Mikunis is the best sushi like jayzzee said, but there's A LOT of good sushi places here. Sac probably does sushi better than any other type of cuisine.

Fox and Goose is good, Street's of London is good, and de Vere's is good but expensive.

Great! Thanks very much for all the recommendations! I'd be sure to check these places out!

Anyone got any recommendations if we wanted to do some kind of water activty? Maybe renting a jetski or tubing or renting a rowing boat or something like that.... We are open to suggestions if you can think of any other activity... We'd have a car so driving really isn't an issue. I am trying to think of maybe Folsom lake or even tahoe area. Reasonable pricing would be fabulous! So if any of you local experts got any pointers i'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks again!

CSUS Aquatic Center. http://www.csusaquaticcenter.com/

You can rent kayaks, canoes, and more, for cheap. From there, you can chill out on Lake Natoma, row/paddle through Folsom until the Prison signs say turn around (or you might get shot at).

There are some rentals of jet skis, etc. on Folsom Lake, but all I've heard is that it's way too expensive.

I imagine there are great opportunities in Tahoe, and I know Reno has a new kayak park, if you're traveling that far.

River rafting is another popular activity in Sacramento.
