 Day Trip to Sacramento

I am planning a trip to the Bay Area the end of August and was considering renting a car and spending the day in Sacramento. It will either coincide with a Monarchs game or a River Cats game, so my evening is planned. But I am curious what things should I do? Does the Capitol have a tour? Are there anything aside from the Legislature and Government things to see?

I remember seeing on tv, during Jesse Ventura's run as Governor of Minnesota, many shops there sold t-shirts or hats of him. With Arnie being Governor of California, are there shops in Sacramento that sell t-shirts or hats with him on it?

rpt- yes!...the Capitol has a free guided tour, on the hour, which lasts about an hour. It is VERY interesting, and most of the docents are very knowedgeable about the building and its history. These docents are hired by the legislators, and are for the most part apolitical, which is a good thing.

The tour is different with each docent, as they are free to show various things that they feel are important. Some areas are in use during the week, and are less accessible than during off hours. For sure, you will hear and see about the rotunda, the gallery of governors, the house and senate chambers, and some other historical offices.

The capitol grounds are also remarkable, and are a separate tour. (or self-guide). Parking can be tough during the week, with time limited meters available.(2 hour max). weekends are easier to park.

Another place to consider to fill up the daytime is the State Railroad museum, in Old Town. Its very close to the capitol, and the parking garage there could be used for both places- it would be a ten minute walk to the capitol.

You will also find the many shops and places that sell governor related keepsakes in Old Town.

Enjoy your trip. dave

Definitely don't miss Old Town, the tour of the Capitol sounds and educational. Go to The Waterboy for a great meal while in the area. :)

Unless it's 115 degrees that day, I strongly recommend the Rivercats game over the Monarchs.

Rivercats: Watch the future stars of the Oakland A's as the sun sets, as you drink cold beer, eat peanuts and relax.

Monarchs: Watch a below-the-rim basketball team that would lose to some boys high school teams, while surrounded by lesbians and screaming 8 year old girls.
